Amnesty International's one million plus volunteers campaign for human rights.

We promote general awareness of human rights and oppose specific abuses of human rights, such as:

torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment

the use of death penalty by governments

disappearances

deliberate and arbitrary killings

detaining prisoners of conscience

detaining political prisoners without a fair trial

taking hostages

children taking part in armed conflicts

We also oppose the return of refugees to countries where they may be at risk of serious violations and abuses; as well as arms and security transfers to places where they can contribute to human rights abuses.

The Moray AI group....

...has been active for 24 years. A core group of about 15 people meets once a month in Elgin or Forres to discuss and plan the human rights campaigns we are involved in at the time.

Our activities include writing letters to foreign authorities regarding specific human rights cases; writing cards to victims of human rights abuses and informing and lobbying our MP Angus Robertson on UK and international legislation and policies concerning human rights issues. We also organise local informative and fundraising events.

Our campaigns at the moment...

At present we are involved in the following campaigns:

Control Arms campaign

Stop violence against women campaign

Country Action Programme India

Our Prisoner of Conscience action file has been closed !!!!
Liu Jingshend was released from prison in China on 27 November 2004.
He had been in prison for almost 13 years for defending worker's rights as a labour activist.
